About Title I
Title I is a federally funded education program. It’s goal is to provide supplemental instruction to qualifying students in specific academic areas. At Sam Placentino Elementary School, our Title I program focuses on helping our students improve their literacy skills as they grow into proficient readers and writers.
There are two models for Title I schools: School-Wide and Targeted Assistance. In Holliston, we facilitate a Targeted Assistance Title I program in which students are identified to receive Title I services based upon their level of academic need. Screeners (short assessments that target specific skills) and other assessments are used frequently throughout the school year to monitor student progress. These assessments may be administered by a Title I literacy tutor, the literacy specialist, or a classroom teacher.
Students in Title I participate in small group supplemental instruction with a qualified literacy tutor or interventionist to target specific literacy learning needs. The literacy instruction that occurs in a small group setting is intended to supplement targeted instruction provided by the classroom teacher in the classroom setting. As a result, classroom teachers, literacy tutors, and the literacy specialist regularly collaborate to ensure a unified approach to literacy instruction.
School administrators and Title I program coordinators involve families of Title I students in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of our Title I Targeted Assistance literacy program to ensure children receive the support needed at home and at school. Students in the Title I program may bring home books they have read in school. Families are encouraged to read these take-home texts with their children as a means for celebrating small successes.

All schools receiving Title I funds consult with families of children participating in Title I programs regarding the design and implementation of those programs annually. Parents/Guardians will be provided opportunities to participate in the program planning process and family engagement activities throughout the year.
Families as Partners
The goal of Title I family engagement is to build effective partnerships with the school community to support student academic achievement. To ensure that this goal is met each year, the Title I program is committed to working in partnership with families in the following ways:

Letter to Families (DESE School Report Card)
February 22, 2024
Dear Families:
Every year, each public school and school district in Massachusetts receives a report card. Just as your child’s report card shows how they are doing in different subjects, the school’s report card is designed to show families how our school is doing in different areas. A link to our school’s report card is available at https://reportcards.doe.mass.edu/2023/01360010.
The report card includes multiple measures of a school’s performance – more than just MCAS scores. It represents a new way of looking at school performance, by providing information on student achievement, teacher qualifications, student learning opportunities, and more.
Report cards are designed to be useful tools for everyone connected to our school. Families can use the information to have meaningful conversations with us about what the school is doing well and where there is room for improvement. Community and education leaders can use the information to better understand how to support students and our school.
You will notice on our report card that we have exceeded the state average in school attendance . To improve student performance in our school, we are aligning curriculum within and across grade levels for a more consistent and equitable academic experience.
We encourage you to become involved in helping us improve our school. We see parents as critical partners in the success of our students and school, and we are grateful for your continued support.
Finally, if your child attends a school (Placentino Elementary) that receives federal Title I funds, you also have the right to request the following information about the qualifications of your child’s classroom teachers:
· Whether your child’s teacher is licensed in the grade levels and subject areas they teach,
· Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under an emergency license or waiver,
· The college degree and major of your child’s teacher, and
· Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
If you have questions about our school’s report card, would like to become involved in school improvement activities, or would like to request information about the qualifications of your student’s classroom teacher, please contact Dr. Jamie Slaney at slaneyj@holliston.k12.ma.us. To see our district’s report card or to search for other schools’ report cards, visit report cards.doe.mass.edu.
Sincerely,
Joanne Menard, Ed.D.
